Zofran (ondansetron) is a drug prescribed to treat nausea predominately for those undergoing chemotherapy or post surgery.  However, many doctors have prescribed Zofran for women to treat pregnancy induced nausea.  HHK is currently pursing claims against the manufacturers of Zofran (ondansetron) alleging that the drug causes children to be born with birth defects.

This litigation has brought up a greater issue of why pregnant women are getting prescriptions for medications that have not yet been tested on the pregnant population.  There are many ethical concerns with testing a new drug with unknown side effects on a pregnant women along with strategic financial reasons why drug manufacturers do not test drugs on pregnant women.

Pro Publica has just released an article that does a wonderful job of explaining the many issues associated with prescribing untested medication to pregnant women, particularly as it relates to Zofran.  To see the article, click here: Most Drugs Aren’t Tested on Pregnant Women. This Anti-nausea Cure Shows Why That’s a Problem.

HHK is currently investigating possible birth defects for cleft pallet and certain heart defects where mothers were prescribed Zofran in the first trimester of their pregnancy. For more information contact attorneys Jim Klick or Danielle Hufft at 504-581-4892 or toll free at 1-844-943-7626.
