On August 27, 2020, Hurricane Laura struck the Louisiana coast as a Category 4 hurricane and headed north leaving behind widespread devastation in cities including Lake Charles, Sulphur, Alexandria, Pineville, Natchitoches, Leesville, and DeRidder. Many homes, businesses and other property were damaged and others had power outages which caused business interruption and other losses.
If you have been affected by Hurricane Laura, it is important to understand what your insurance covers, what deductibles are applicable and what you need to do to preserve and document your claim.
A review of your policy will show you your policy limits and named storm or hurricane deductible. It will also tell you whether you have an “actual cash value” policy or a “replacement cost value” policy. Certain exclusions in your policy may affect your ability to recover.
Businesses have specific coverages that may provide coverage for business interruption, governmental order (civil authority) and extra expenses paid to minimize your losses.
In our webpage: Lessons From Katrina, we discuss the difficulties that our clients faced after Hurricane Katrina and how you can better prepare yourself for making an insurance claim.
