Talcum Body PowderCancer prevention organizations, healthcare providers, and medical researchers and experts have raised awareness that talcum powder usage may be linked to the development of ovarian cancer in women.

Talc is a mineral that is mined around the world. It is comprised mainly of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. It comprises mainly of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. Talcum powder is widely used in many consumer products, such cosmetic products, baby powders, and adult body and facial powders. As a baby powder, it is used mainly to absorb moisture and to help prevent rashes.

Studies on the causal link between talcum powder usage and ovarian cancer date back to as early as 1971. Recently, a 2013 study published in Cancer Prevention Research suggests that the use of talcum powder in the genital area by women leads to a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. In that particular study, the data on 2,000 women showed that those who use talc body powder in their genital areas may have a 20-30 percent higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who do not use talc powder.

In November 2013, a South Dakota jury found that Johnson & Johnson, a prominent manufacturer of talcum powder products, failed to warn consumers of the link between ovarian cancer and the use of talc-based body powder for feminine hygiene. In fact, a New York Times article published in 1982 on the possible link between talc usage and ovarian cancer suggests that Johnson & Johnson was aware that women may be three times as likely to develop ovarian cancer if they used talcum powder on their genitals. Many industry experts allege that manufactures of talc-based products knew about the potential causal link between talc and ovarian cancer and failed to warn consumers.
